Commenters on previous posts have had many nice things to say about the cover for The Dust of 100 Dogs and I think rightly so. It was a cover that came about in a way strangely suitable for the book. In the same way I was not looking for a "reincarnated pirate girl book" (a phrase that has become the internal shorthand for the book) when the manuscript showed up, I did not expect this cover at all. It was a complete and wonderful surprise.

I have read a great many YA books in my life, having spent ten years as a children's bookseller in a past life. Though it may be just a hare too edgy for it, this book has Newbery Award written all over it. I thought so from page 23 of the manuscript.
We did employee bets at the bookstore on what would win the Newbery each year (NOT an easy guess!)...I got it right the year Shiloh won, just sayin'. ;-)

I'm still loving that cover. LOVING IT. Can't wait to read the book - seriously can't wait.
