Margo Rabb on YA in the Grey Lady

Margo Rabb's Cures for Heartbreak was one of the books that got me through torturous jury duty a year ago. Check out her essay in the Times on YA. Good stuff. (Thanks A.S. King for sending the link.)

I don't know that Rabb needed to take this point up in her piece, but all of that snobbery about YA struck me as incredibly short sighted regarding the benefits of books that get teenagers to read. How do the critics of YA think they are going to have any audience for adult books if kids aren't developing the habit of reading? Isn't that where it starts?

Margo blogged further about this here:

I can't see what the fuss was about. I thought her original article was an accurate piece that outlined her personal experience quite well. Having been through a similar adjustment experience myself, I don't see it as anything but a positive, natural transition. (Which was only slightly surprising because of an inability to see the full potential of my own work - a common thing for writers, if you ask agents.)

And yes, Susan Fine - I agree. Very short sighted. I would not be such a huge book lover, I don't think, if I hadn't have found Paul Zindel at age 12. He was the makings of me as a reader.
